Corporate America may be using AI to cut jobs, but small businesses are using it to keep them

July 26, 2026
Contrary to the widespread narrative that AI primarily eliminates jobs, this article argues that many small businesses are using AI to augment employees rather than replace them, helping staff automate repetitive work so they can focus on higher-value customer interactions and business growth. It suggests that persistent labor shortages and lean staffing make AI a productivity tool for small businesses rather than a workforce reduction strategy.
WHY THIS MATTERS!
While this Guardian article largely reflects the perspective of today’s small businesses (which are typically resource-constrained and cannot easily eliminate staff), this contemporary finding doesn’t necessarily predict what will happen as AI agents become more capable and prolific over the next five to ten years. That being said, we spotlight this piece because from an Occupational AI Psychology perspective, this trend represents a shift toward human-AI collaboration, where workers must learn how to trust AI appropriately, redefine their professional roles, and integrate AI into daily decision-making. Understanding these psychological adaptations is essential because the future of work will depend not only on what AI can do, but on how people learn to work alongside it.
